Candid Outlook: Kai, Mayfair

Kai, Mayfair

This restaurant oozes with refinery and ultimate luxury from the very moment you set eyes on its front doors. Kai Mayfair has a 1 Michelin star rating and definitely provides the food, atmosphere and experience to match. Gaze deeply into the exterior features and you can see how much thought has gone into setting a relaxed but indulgent feeling at this location. The chairs remind me of warm evenings I’ve spent at Monaco’s dockside. The flowers and greenery provide a very spring feeling even in August!

On arrival, I was greeted by the hostess and had my temperature taken and appropriately prompted to sanitise my hands. I was shown my table and seated within minutes of the reservation time. A welcome drink was offered and the menu was explained - a QR Code as many restaurants have implemented.

For a starter, I opted for the salt and pepper tofu which was so tasty. The tofu was lightly coated and seasoned with a soft mushroom-like texture. It was served hot in a very Kai-themed bowl. For a starter, I felt that the portion size was very generous so this was shared between two.

As a main, I chose the Lobster & Lobster dish which was lovely. I felt that the portion size was generous and probably better suited if I hadn’t decided to go for a starter. I also felt that the presentation was okay but the taste was much better.
My dinner guest decided to go for the duck with pancakes and other sides accompanied.

The size of this dish is very generous! I will definitely suggest maybe sharing a few dishes to get the best value out of the meal. A side order of special fried rice was placed but this was not necessary. The pancakes were not touched and the greens were left behind too. Kai really does provide a lot of food even at its high standard of quality.

To find, I chose a chocolate dessert to share. This is a very large dessert priced at £15. It reminds me of Harry Dolce Vita’s Toadstool as it offers a similar presentation.

The chocolate was rich in flavour and not too sickly. The macaroon tops were balanced in softness and crispness.

I enjoyed some of this dessert whilst it was too much for one person to finish.

Some complimentary treats to finish our experience at Kai, Mayfair.  I sampled 3 out of 4 which has impeccable taste. My favourite was the small white macaroon.

The bathroom is located downstairs below the main restaurant which is accessible via the front door. It is a spacious bathroom with individual toilets having two mirrors , sink and some towels on the side.

I would not say this place has a very clear Instagram feel. It is nice and refined and perfect for a quiet Sunday evening dinner.

Overall, I enjoyed my time at Kai. It is somewhere to experience for the Michelin style feel and the food is nice. It definitely would attract an older birthday celebrant or someone who prefers very refined restaurant settings.
